Sugar cane fields set alight during the harvesting season were once a common occurrence, but now quite rare. The deep orange glow can be seen for miles around. Up close, the towering flames roar and crackle, leaping many metres into the air. It is a truly spectacular sight to behold, but also very fleeting; the flames die down as rapidly as they arose, leaving only blackened smoking fields, ready to be harvested the next day.
